Decay of Quantized Vortices in Quantum Turbulence

چکیده
The decay of quantized vortex line length in quantum turbulence at zero temperature is studied numerically by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a small-scale dissipation. The obtained decay of the vortex line length L is consistent with the L ∝ t −3/2 behavior which supports the Kolmogorov energy spectrum of quantum turbulence. The mechanism of the decay is discussed.

Decay of quantized vorticity in super#uid 4He at mK temperatures
An experimental investigation of the free decay of quantized turbulence in isotopically pure super#uid 4He at mK temperatures is discussed. Vortices are created by a vibrating grid, and detected by their trapping of negative ions. Preliminary results suggest the existence of a temperature-independent vortex decay mechanism below 1&70 mK.
متن کاملAn introduction to quantum turbulence.
This paper provides a brief introduction to quantum turbulence in simple superfluids, in which the required rotational motion in the superfluid component is due entirely to the topological defects that are identified as quantized vortices. Particular emphasis is placed on the basic dynamical behaviour of the quantized vortices and on turbulent decay mechanisms at a very low temperature. There a...

We develop a computational model of quantum turbulence decay employing a kinematic prescription for the normal fluid. We find that after an initial transient, the length of the vortex tangle L decreases and for large times obeys the scaling law L ≈ t−0.45. The average magnitude (along the quantized vortices) of the superfluid and line-vortex velocity are close and differ significantly from the ...

We discuss an experimental technique developed to visualize quantized vortices in helium II. We illuminate micron-sized solid particles of hydrogen suspended in the fluid, and mark quantized vortex cores within the volume observed by a camera. While, under some circumstances, the particles modify vortex dynamics by the action of viscous drag and by pinning vortex intersections, we do capture ba...

After more than a decade of experiments generating and studying the physics of quantized vortices in atomic gas Bose–Einstein condensates, research is beginning to focus on the roles of vortices in quantum turbulence, as well as other measures of quantum turbulence in atomic condensates. Such research directions have the potential to uncover new insights into quantum turbulence, vortices, and s...
